Is there a present you’d want to get but know no one would ever think to get you since you’re an adult?

Written by Abby Joseph

I just got back from a short trip to Key West, Florida. For those unaware, Key West is a small island off the southern tip of Florida, and it’s my home away from home.

I first visited Key West on a family vacation when I was a kid, and I instantly fell in love with its laid-back atmosphere and tropical scenery. Since then, I’ve been back many times, and it’s always a treat to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and relax on the beautiful beaches.

Key West is also a great place to meet new people. So I did what comes easily to me and asked a number of them: “What is something you’d really want to get as a present but no one ever thinks to give you since you’re an adult?”

Here’s what they had to say:

A Treasure Hunt

I met Mark C. at the Bull and Whistle Bar in Key West

Now that I’m 37, I’m no longer with my former fiancée, but when I turned 33, she surprised me with a treasure hunt throughout the home, complete with little presents at each stop and a weekend away as the grand finale. Undoubtedly one of the most memorable birthdays I’ve had as an adult.

Mark C. from San Fernando, CA

What’s not to love about a treasure hunt? The suspense of not knowing what you’ll find next. The excitement of following clues and figuring out puzzles. And, of course, the thrill of finally discovering the hidden treasure.

A good treasure hunt can be the perfect way to add some spice to a party or an afternoon with friends. And if you’re feeling really adventurous, you can even try your hand at geocaching, a modern-day treasure hunt that uses GPS coordinates to lead the way.

So why not give it a try? After all, there’s nothing like the feeling of finally finding that hidden treasure.

Hide and Seek

This isn’t a present, but I’d really appreciate a game of hide and seek.

Jane C. from Melvern, KS

Nothing was more exciting than a game of hide and seek when you were a kid. It was an exhilarating game because of the thrill of trying to discover the best hiding place, the suspense of waiting to see whether you had been found, and the exultation of success when you finally emerged triumphant.

And just when I thought my childhood days were finished, I learned that playing hide and seek as an adult is much more fun. Maybe it’s because we’ve had more experience hiding, or because the stakes are bigger, or both; there’s nothing like the joy of outwitting another adult.

Whatever the case may be, I can state without a doubt that the game of hide-and-seek is just as much fun for grownups as it is for kids.

Give it a go the next time you’re in a foolish mood; you could be pleasantly surprised.

A Microscope

Brandi J from Bellevue, WA
I met Brandi during the Goombay Festival!

I want someone to gift me a microscope.

Brandi J from Bellevue, WA

Never in a million years did I imagine that I would be the sort of person who would get giddy over a microscope. Since I got my own, though, I’ve been able to view things in a whole new light.

My microscope has opened my eyes to a previously unseen world teeming with tiny animals and plants. I’ve also been able to examine in more detail commonplace items like flowers and leaves that I previously took for granted.

It’s been amazing to have such a close look at them and uncover nuances I missed before. I feel like I’ve discovered a whole new universe thanks to my microscope, and I’m enjoying every second of it.

Roller Skates

I want someone to buy me a pair of roller skates!

Bryan L. from Houston, T

Remember roller skates? They’re those things you wore as a kid that made it possible to roll around on eight wheels. And they were awesome. Well, good news: they’re still awesome – even as an adult. Here are just a few of the reasons why:

First of all, they’re a great way to get around. Need to make a quick trip to the store? Just strap on your skates and away you go. No need for a car or bus.

Second, they’re great exercise. skating is a low-impact form of cardio that’s easy on your joints. And since you can do it almost anywhere – on sidewalks, in parks, even in your own living room – it’s easy to fit into your busy schedule.

Finally, roller skating is just plain fun. It’s a great way to relieve stress and clear your head. So next time you’re feeling overwhelmed, lace up your skates and enjoy the wind in your hair (or helmet, depending on how safety-conscious you are).

Art Supplies!

Jennifer J from San Francisco, CA
I met Jennifer at Captain Tony’s Saloon

Man, can someone please buy me an art kit!

Jennifer J from San Francisco, CA

As any adult knows, life can be pretty stressful. From work deadlines to family obligations, there’s always something that needs to be done. And sometimes, it can all feel a bit too much.

That’s where art kits come in. With everything you need to get started, they’re the perfect way to relax and unwind. Plus, they allow you to tap into your creative side, something that can often be neglected in the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

And who knows? You might even discover a hidden talent along the way. So next time you’re feeling frazzled, reach for an art kit and let yourself escape into a world of creativity.

Ice Cream!

Gerald S. from Perth Amboy, NJ
I met Gerald fishing in Key West!

I’d love an ice cream social like I had when I was in first grade!

Gerald S. from Perth Amboy, NJ

I remember going to ice cream socials as a kid and thinking they were the best events ever. Free ice cream?

Yes, please!

What could be better than enjoying some delicious ice cream while catching up with old friends? All in all, I think ice cream socials are just as cool for adults as they were for kids.

Takeaway

Well, there you have it. It’s pretty clear that adults can have just as much fun with classic kid’s toys and activities as kids can.

So the next time you’re feeling down, or stressed out, or just need a break from reality, why not try something new?

Pick up a skateboard and take a spin around the park.

Pull out your microscope and examine some tiny creatures.

Bust out the paints and canvas and create something beautiful.

Whatever you do, make sure to enjoy yourself – after all, that’s what life is all about.
